Originating from the Gironde region of Bordeaux, France, it was used in blending but now is almost exclusively grown in Chile. Carmenere is very dark skinned and a cross between Cabernet Franc and Gros Cabernet grapes. It is thought to have first been planted by the Romans in Bordeaux. The name Carmenere comes from the French word for crimson, Carmenere tends to be rich bodied with smokey, spicy and earthy aromas. Medium tannin, the aging potential is similar to Cabernet Sauvignon. Explore this rare varietal which is highly regarded in certain regions of the globe but fairly unknown here.
This is my 4th vintage of Carmenere with the first two vintages under the Capiaux label and a big hit. I planted it in my back yard, a little over an acre about 10 years ago. Here in Oak Knoll, the soil is known as Pleasanton Loam with very little rock…more in the silt loam category.
A dark, deep garnet wine with aroma of ripe plum, smoked meats and characteristic dried ancho chili pepper. Flavors of cranberry and black currant, white pepper and some spiciness which is a beloved characteristic of this varietal. Fine tannins, smooth finish.
